How does the $10,000 Scholarship Work

To explain how the Scholarship works for each of the programs in this article, we will use the Bachelor of Business Administration-General program at Yorkville University-Campus Vancouver as an example.

This program is structured in a three-term year (i.e., each school year has 3 terms, unlike other institutions). Accordingly, the Student’s first year Tuition is for 3 semesters, and the $10,000 Scholarship has already been applied to this program’s Tuition as shown in the Table below:

Per the Table, without the Scholarship the Tuition for this program would be CAD $67,500, which is reduced to $57,500 with the Scholarship. On average, this is $5,750 per semester, or $17,250 per year (remember, each year has 3 academic semesters, unlike other programs).

In the list or Yorkville University programs included in this article, all Tuition numbers are shown after the Scholarship has already been applied, and correspond to the first 3 semesters of each program (Ŧ).

(Ŧ) Costs do not include other fees such as textbooks, expendable supplies, equipment, and resource fees. Tuition is shown in Canadian Dollars; Tuition rates are confirmed three months before the start of each term. Yorkville University also accepts equivalent payment in other currencies. Changes to tuition rates will be announced at least three months before the start of the term to which they apply.

United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) Bursary

“In honour of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), international students showing proof of US or Mexican citizenship will not be charged the international tuition fee. These students will pay the domestic tuition rate for Yorkville University programs.”

And now, our Freebie for you!

We have prepared a free Travel Checklist for you, to use before you travel to study in Canada… here it goes:

Review COVID-19 Travel Information

Before you travel, check with us (become a Member first!), and also visit this COVID-19 travel requirements website by the Government of Canada for updates and the latest information.

Before You Start Packing

  • Verify luggage restrictions with the airline: how many pieces of carry-on luggage are you allowed in cabin, how many can you check in, their maximum dimensions and weight, as well as any luggage fees that you may need to pay at your airport of departure (credit card payments are usually preferred);
  • Pack clothes for all seasons and types of weather -you can use Environment Canada’s website for weather forecasts and for information on the typical and seasonal climate in the city where you will study in Canada.
  • Check what you cannot bring through customs, such as animals, plants, fresh fruits and vegetables, meat products, controlled substances, etc.

Travel and Study Documents

When you arrive in Canada, you will need to show your travel and study-related documents to the Border Control or Immigration Officers at the Port of Entry for clearance before exiting the airport. As a service to you with your Clearport Student Concierge Membership, we will prepare a complete Travel Package for you with all the documents you need, exactly in the order needed.

These documents must be printed and presented in paper in the order we prepare them (they cannot be stored on a laptop, tablet, or mobile phone).

Make sure that you can easily access a folder with your Clearport Travel Package, Passport and Visa to present them when asked. Have your Travel Package with your carry-on at all times and do not check it in with your luggage

At a minimum, your travel and study Document Checklist for what you need to bring you should include:

  • A valid Passport and Study Visa;
  • A copy of your Passport and Visa (we suggest that you also email a scan of your Passport and Visa to yourself, as well as to a family member, in case of loss);
  • Your Letter of Introduction (issued by the Visa office);
  • A Cover Letter to your Travel Package, listing your documents;
  • Your Letter of Acceptance/Admission (LOA) from the School;
  • A printout of the relevant information on the Study Program that you will study in Canada;
  • If applicable, a printout of the COVID-Readiness Plan of your school in Canada;
  • Original or certified copies of your academic transcripts and qualifications;
  • Proof of payment for your Tuition and Accommodation (Housing);
  • Other personal Government-issued Photo ID (identification), such as a Driver’s License, Birth Certificate, Voting Card, etc.;
  • Any required COVID-19 tests or vaccination results / records, as necessary (remember to check the Government’s COVID-19 travel requirements website before you travel);
  • X-rays and the results of your Medical Exam, if you were required to get one as part of your Visa process;
  • Proof of Funds: this is the evidence that you used to support your visa application demonstrating that you have enough money to study in Canada and cover your living expenses, such as bank and investment statements, etc.;
  • Accommodation confirmation and full address;
  • University or College address in Canada and contact details;
  • Your Health Insurance documents (we also help you to get Health Insurance valid in Canada);
  • The College or University’s 24-hour helpline;
  • Details of any prearranged transportation provided by the University or College in Canada (we suggest you book this service if available);
  • Any additional required documentation that may apply to your country or study program in Canada.

Bring With You

  • You can set up a bank account when you arrive, so don’t carry too much cash. Bring enough to cover your immediate expenses, and in a mix of small- and medium- denomination bills (no bills over $100, and no bills smaller than $10). Preferably, change your currency to Canadian Dollars before arriving to Canada so that you are not out of cash (remember, exchange services in Canada may be closed at the time your flight arrives in Canada).
  • Credit and Debit Card: Bring at least one major International Credit Card (Visa, Mastercard), and -ideally- an internationally accepted debit card. Before you travel, check with your bank / card issuer that your cards will work in Canada, and make sure to notify them in advance of your travel itinerary (some banks / card issuers will block your cards when you first use them abroad if they do not receive notice of travel).
  • Mobile Phone, preferably with an international plan that includes Canada, or unlocked so that you can purchase a local plan and SIM card;
  • Prescription medication. You only need to bring enough medication for a few weeks. Bring with you any prescriptions that you need, in English, so that a Pharmacy can fill them for you when you arrive. Check in advance which medications are you allowed to bring to Canada, and which are not allowed.
  • An ICE card in your Wallet. ICE Cards (“ICE” is short for “In Case of Emergency”) are typed (and typically laminated) credit card-sized, and they include the name, relationship to you, email and phone number with country and area codes of the person(s) that should be contacted in case there is an emergency involving you.
  • Travel power adaptors and cables for laptop, phone, and any other devices you will require. In Canada, the power plugs and sockets are most commonly of Type B, and less frequently Type A (see image below). The standard voltage is 120 V and the standard frequency is 60 Hz. Adaptors are internationally available for sale, including sets that have various adaptors for different countries.

  • Weather-appropriate clothing. Check the weather forecast a couple of days before traveling, and again before checking your luggage at your airport of origin, so that you have appropriate clothes handy at your arrival in Canada.
  • A list of the items you packed in each piece of luggage, as well as a description and a photo (in your phone) of each piece of luggage. Tag each piece with your full name, the address of the accommodations where you will live in Canada, and your telephone number.
  • A few face masks and hand-sanitizing products (if liquid, in a clear bottle containing less than 100 ml).

Do NOT Bring with You

  • No liquids of more than 100 ml in each package are allowed on the plane with you (in the cabin). Check these restrictions with your airline.
  • Linens and Bedding;
  • Kitchen equipment, utensils, and appliances;
  • Toiletries in large packaging or amounts;
  • Forbidden items, such as Meat, Dairy, Fruit, Vegetables, and Potato-based products;

What Happens When You Arrive in Canada

After arriving by air:

1) You must go through Immigration Control before picking up your luggage (that is why your Travel Package mentioned above must be in your carry-on, easily accessible, and never checked in with your luggage);

2) The Immigration Officer will ask you some questions. The purpose is to ensure that you are coming to Canada for genuine reasons and that you intend to leave after completing your program. You must be able to answer these questions clearly without having to rely on an interpreter.

A list of common questions that an Immigration Officer may ask you can include the following:

  • What is your full name?
  • Where are you from?
  • What is your home address?
  • What are your Mother’s and Father’s names?
  • What is your birth date and where were you born?
  • What University or College are you going to attend?
  • What Study program are you going to study, and how long is it?
  • What are your plans after completing your Study program?
  • Do you plan to work while you study in Canada?
  • Did you take an English Language test to be admitted in school? What were your scores?
  • Who will pay for your expenses while you study in Canada? How, and are those funds available?
  • Who packed your bag(s)? Do you know what’s inside the bag(s)?
  • How much cash are you carrying with you?
  • Do you have relatives, friends, or family in Canada? If so, where do they live? If not, where will you stay while you study in Canada? Are you going there directly, or are you staying at a hotel first?
  • Is someone picking you up at the airport?

Respond to these questions in short, simple, and clear answers. If you did not hear or cannot understand a question, ask the officer to please repeat or clarify the question.

3) Pick-up your luggage at the appropriate belt, make sure that you have appropriately and entirely filled in the necessary Customs Form, and head to the Customs Exit point.  Present the form to the Customs Officer and answer any questions he/she has.  Be prepared for your luggage to be inspected at the discretion of the Customs Officer.

4) Once you clear Customs, meet with your pick-up party / service, or arrange for a cab or taxi and go to your address of accommodation.

5) Drop your luggage, freshen up, and begin your life as an International Student in Canada!
